TRENTO - THE ELEGANCE OF ALPINE SPARKLING WINE
Trento, located in the foothills of the Italian Alps, is one of the world’s premier sparkling wine regions. Known for its high-altitude vineyards and dedication to the traditional method of sparkling wine production, Trento has built a reputation for elegance, precision, and exceptional quality. As the birthplace of Trentodoc, Italy’s first traditional-method sparkling wine, the region continues to set the standard for alpine viticulture.
The cool climate of Trento, influenced by both the mountains and the nearby Lake Garda, creates ideal conditions for growing high-quality grapes. The wide diurnal temperature range helps grapes retain acidity while developing depth and complexity. The region’s limestone-rich soils, reminiscent of those found in Champagne, contribute to the distinctive minerality and structure of Trento’s wines.
Chardonnay is the dominant grape in Trento, prized for its ability to produce refined, expressive sparkling wines with crisp citrus, green apple, and floral notes. Pinot Noir is also widely planted, adding depth, red fruit character, and structure to many Trentodoc blends. Some producers also incorporate Pinot Meunier and Pinot Blanc, further expanding the stylistic diversity of the region’s sparkling wines.
Aging is a key factor in Trentodoc’s distinctive profile, with non-vintage wines spending a minimum of 15 months on the lees, while Riserva wines require at least 36 months, enhancing their complexity, texture, and autolytic character. This commitment to extended aging results in wines with fine mousse, layered flavours, and remarkable aging potential.
